Welcome to DISCOVERY HIDA
Our passion is enhancing your Japanese travel experience through informative and entertaining tours, rich in what you might miss out on as an independent traveller. The Hida region has a myriad of unique sights and experiences, not all easily accessible to the unguided. We aim to open the doors on authentic rural Japan, whether through interaction with local people, or providing insight into local culture and traditions, or showcasing nature and its rhythms in the impressive Hida landscape.
About our guide
Hisa Matsuo:
Owner and guide of DISCOVERY HIDA
Originally from Tokyo, I began my guiding career in New Zealand, qualifying in Adventure Tourism before working as a guide on the Milford Track. After a few years, my focus changed: I began to think about using the skills I had gained, both in terms of language and guiding, to promote understanding of my own country, Japan, to visitors from overseas.
So I moved to the Hida region in 2010, attracted by its history, cultural traditions, wonderful food, scenery and wildlife. In my role as activity manager for SATOYAMA EXPERIENCE, I worked within a team to establish the business from its outset, developing all tours and operations to the point where it now attracts nearly 4,000 visitors each year.
Having gained a wealth of experience and knowledge over nine years of working as both manager and head guide, I have recently set up my own tour company, keen to take visitors to places they may otherwise miss and provide experiences they may not otherwise have.
